La Source Attack 2012

Located in the remote alpine village of St. Jerôme, La Source Attack is on the short-list of challenging events on the world downhill circuit. La Source Attack is single-handedly responsible for putting Quebec on the speedboarding map. Each year competitors fly in from all corners of the earth to attempt what some call Le Teutonia du Nord. In fact, the Brazilians have another name for Teutonia: El Source Attack de Brasil.

A common facial expression at La Source Attack.

If you’re looking for 20% grades, never-ending sweepers, back-to-back hairpins, and speeds in excess of 120 kilometres per hour La Source Attack is the place to go. Montreal speedboarder Niko Desmarais currently holds the course record at 121.30kmph.

Riders ripping the course at approximately 118.9 kmph.

Since its conception in 1998 La Source Attack has inspired the gravity sport community with its high-skill demand. For over ten years La Source has been pushing riders to do things they have never done before. Due to its highly technical riding requirements the event had a strict, invite-only policy between 1998 and 2008.

You know you want those pants.

For riders to simply make it down the hill all their experience, mental preparation, and carefully selected gear has to come together perfectly. We have a saying at La Source Attack: you don’t race against each other, you race against the mountain. The comaraderie felt between racers is inspiring.

You can practically smell the comaraderie.

At the end of the day the riders take home something much more valuable than victory: friendship. Perhaps this is the ultimate lesson of La Source Attack.

4th Annual Mustache Derby

There is so much to say about this trip that I don’t even know where to start! Usually, random funny stuff happens on a skate trip, that’s just how it works. This time, I feel like we hit the motherload of random funny stuff. We first arrived at the Mustache HQ around 12:30 am to be welcomed by drunk, sweaty men playing skateboards on Sean’s basement mini-ramp. I don’t have any pictures of that but the thing is pure gnar!

We set up our tents in the dark with a couple beers and went for a well deserve night of sleep after a 10 hour drive.

The next morning, we woke up and had breakfast with everyone; riders, friends, family and domestic animals. We packed up the cars and split up to skate. Half the crew went to the skatepark while the other half went to the hills. The first spot we hit was pretty intimidating for the first couple runs

Matt B trying to scare off the next turn by assuming the “terrified crouching tiger” position.

But after a couple runs, everyone started to enjoy what that fast, winding road had to offer.

Brandon had multiple orgasms riding down that hill.

No one has as much fun has Max Benoît! NO ONE!

By the time we were done skating that spot, Sean had to leave because the two cars going to the skate park smashed into each other! You know, when they say don’t talk on your cellphone while driving? Well a toothbrush might not be a cellphone but I don’t think brushing your teeth while driving is any safer! Yeah…

As soon as we were done laughing about Anthony and Zack’s fate, we left for the next spot: a fast hill where we could skate in tight packs.

Fun was had, gnar was shredded, bumps were given and good times were shared!

We headed back to Sean’s place with plenty of sunburns and were welcomed with hot-dogs and a trip to the local brewery organized by Crystal. The guys at Flying Dog brewery gave us a tour of their facility, offered us copious amounts of FREE beer and entertained us with a live show from The Sitch, just because they thought Mustache Derby was rad!

Once we drank all of our free beer, we headed back to Sean’s place for some more drinks and to listen to The Primer Greys playing in their basement!

And then came Sunday, with all the rain mother nature could throw at us! Sean lead us to the hill, which is nothing like the hill from past Mustache Derbies.

This hill was something; it was steep, fast, technical, terribly paved, and to top it all off, we got to skate it in the rain!

Anthony’s like : Yeah, I’m still unsure of whether I like this hill or not…

Freddy knows he likes this hill!

When we finally got the morning bitchiness out of our system we started hauling down the crazy road!

Sean showing that road who’s boss!

As in normal events, it all came down to who could charge the hardest into those turns without crashing or over sliding. And here’s the podium for all y’all!

1st : Ludo

2nd : Brandon

3rd : Dylan

After the podium, we packed up the car under the rain, and left the race course to go to the hospital where Frank was waiting to get his shoulder popped back into place. He dislocated it while trying to footbrake on that gritty, uneve  pavement… We waited there for roughly 4 hours before the doctors gave him the “ok”. Max, Matt and Anthony (who needed a ride back to Ithaca thanks to Zack!)  spent most of that time lurking in the hospital’s parking garage, playing some music on the car’s radio which ultimately led up to us having to drift start the car. We finally left Frederick, MD around 6h30 pm and drove all night through rain and  F**in snow! Yeah you read me, snow which sucks to drive in on old summer tires! We managed to get back home in Montreal around 5 am.

To me, this event gets better every single year. Sean and Crystal throw together one of the best get-togethers on the East Coast year after year! Being there with all the entire East Coast longboard family feels like a home away from home. Thanks again for being so rad!

Polar bear out!

Enjoy.

Le Moulin Outlaw

If there is one thing we learned from the Le Moulin Outlaw it’s that spandex is in for 2012.

*Cue porn music*

It’s sexy, aerodynamic, and completely safe to skate in.

So next time you go out shopping with your mom ask for a spandex suit.

She’ll definitely think it’s totally normal.

For more girls shredding check out Longboard Girls Crew Montreal.

Of course, you can only fight spandex with spandex. And as always, it comes down to 3 people.

Montreal Slide Jam III

This weekend the third annual Montreal Slide Jam brought together the freeride community of Quebec and Ontario in one epic competition.

One of the interesting additions since last year was the use of a bungee cord:

This allowed competitors to be accelerated to approximately warp 3 before launching themselves into a standup slide. In some cases with a short stop on the rider’s face. I hope to see this bungee cord at all the events this year.

Here’s a recap of the winners:

Open:      1- CharlesO      2- Alex      3- Seb (oink)

Women:      1- Cindy      2- Kalie      3- Kayla      (Check out Montreal Girls Crew.)

Junior:      1- Frank       2- Jérémie      3- Mini Jacob

Hardwheel:     1- Seb (oink)      2- Mike Lacrak      3- CharlesO

Longest Stand-up:      1- CharlesO      2- Mike Lacrack      3- Jordan Montoya

Magic Pucks – Vermont Raw Run

Here on the East Coast we are proud to say that we’re not afraid of bad pavement. This is especially true for us in Quebec and our neighbors in Vermont. In this raw run Jake Palmer  follows myself and SkateHouseMedia‘s Matt K down a steep maze of cracks, dips, humps, and what the Vermonters call “crags” (you don’t wanna know). Those who learn to ride on the East Coast develop impressive powers to keep their pucks attached to their gloves as they slide over cracks. Take notes, kids.

Check out Vermont Session and follow what our neighbors down South are up to!

FFA Winter Outlaw 2012

For the second year in a row we opened the downhill season in Quebec City with FFA‘s winter garage outlaw comically named the Spiral of Doom.  The spiral of doom is about as gnarly as garages get: not at all, yet, everyone was looking forward to this event. Perhaps because it’s the dawn of the season or because it’s simply the first get-together with friends who you don’t often see during the snowy months of the year. Whatever the reason energy ran high. The spring air was exciting and this year we were also celebrating the 3 year anniversary of Free For All Boardshop. Unfortunately, Dominic Pérusse could not make it to his own event because his shop was flooded with spring customers. This is a sure reminder of our exploding community considering 100 of Quebec City’s longboarders were at the event!

Stéphanie Hunter was on the scene with here camera capturing the pure gnar:

What’s fun about slow races is the infinite number of ways people have of making them more interesting. A perfect example of this was Michael Labreche with his rocket board.

Watch out…

Of course, rocket or not, in the end it comes down to 3 people:

1.-Sam C      2-Charles Ouimet      3-Louis Ricard

And thanks to all the sponsors (Orangotang, Kebbek,  Rotule, Loaded, HypeFullbag, Motion, Landyachtz and Restless) everyone went home with a prize!

Thanks to Dom Pérusse for an awesome event and to Stéphanie Hunter for the photos!
